Operations with Decimals
This unit starts from where students already are in regards to the four operations with whole numbers. Students will apply their understanding of decimal place value to the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of decimals to hundredths. To help students better understand these concepts, there will be many opportunities to explore computations in a problem context. Students will be taught to use mental strategies to make quick estimations to determine the reasonableness of answers. Students will also have an opportunity to explore how calculators and spreadsheets can be a helpful tool for calculations and problem solving.Key questions
- How are operations with decimals different/similar to operations with whole numbers?
- How can we use models to help us add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals?
- How can rounding numbers be helpful when operating with decimal numbers?
- What strategies may be useful to try when solving a challenging problem?
They will also develop their standard algorithm practices as well as using estimation skills.
Combining factual knowledge of decimals, procedural competency with the four operations using decimals and conceptual understanding of decimal place value is the goal for students in this unit.
